Free Online U-Shaped Staircase Calculator

A U-shaped staircase makes a complete 180-degree turn, with two parallel flights connected by either a landing platform or winder steps. This design is ideal for maximizing vertical rise within a compact floor area.

The U-shape configuration is commonly used when the floor opening is positioned against a wall, allowing both flights to run parallel along the same wall. The space between the two flights (the well) typically ranges from 100-200mm.

When using winder steps for the 180° turn, 6 pie-shaped treads are typically used (compared to 3 for an L-shaped 90° turn). This creates a smooth, continuous path but requires precise manufacturing of the angular treads.

A landing platform in a U-shaped staircase provides a generous rest area and makes the staircase safer and easier to navigate with furniture. The platform depth should be at least equal to the staircase width.

Our 3D calculator visualizes both configurations in real-time, allowing you to compare winder steps versus landing and experiment with dimensions to find the optimal design for your space.
